It all revolves around the actions of the manager, Stacy. Our flight was going to arrive into Charlotte after midnight. I was told a shuttle would still be available but when I called it was done by 11 PM so I had to take a taxi. The next morning when I explained the circumstances, without my asking, or expecting it, she reimbursed me the cost of the taxi. Customer service like that is very hard to find today.

Coping with suicide hasn’t been the only struggle for parishioners. Personal experience with mental illness has prompted two church members to action. While the trend is too new to be reflected in hard numbers, mental health advocates and faith leaders say that a growing number of houses of worship across the nation are ministering to those with mental health challenges. Few have discerned the church’s call to nurture body, soul and mind as dramatically as Christ Church. After graduating from Yale and Furman Universities with degrees in organ performance and music theory, Ben came to North Carolina to serve as Organist and Choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church in Belmont. In 1992, he became Director of Music and Organist at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where he was the Founding Director of The Choir School at St. Peter’s.
CONNECTING PEOPLE TO GOD AND EACH OTHER
In the 1700s and early 1800s, Quakers opened rural “retreats” for the mentally ill — forerunners of psychiatric hospitals. Six weeks before his death, he suffered a football-related concussion, which caused daily headaches. He had to step away from football, and he missed three weeks of school, further fraying his social network. In 2019, the church created the SOS group, which meets twice a month for an hour and a half, longer if necessary. The half-dozen families involved politely declined a reporter’s request to sit in, asking for privacy. While the initiatives are focused on the congregation, the community is welcome to attend the classes and programs.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God, he said; there is grace and hope for those who die from suicide. It has helped one member establish a nonprofit residential mental health center and another launch a one-woman crusade to educate people about bipolar disorder. It has hosted two appearances by bestselling author Brené Brown to share her message that asking for help is a sign of strength. In addition to the SOS group, the church has invested in mental health support and awareness in a number of ways.

A tenured music historian and writer, David’s love of music led him to develop a meaningful relationship with The Beach Boys, curating and reporting on their history for over 30 years. In 2021 he reunited The Beach Boys and their children when co-producing a re-recording of the group’s 1970 recording “Add Some Music to Your Day” with an accompanying music video that he directed to benefit Feeding America. David brings the same passion and commitment to his administrative role at Christ Church.
In addition to her strong passion for outreach, Joan likes being outdoors while hiking, gardening, and participating in community service. We worshiped on the lawn when weather and COVID-19 rates permitted. On Good Friday, families participated in Stations of the Cross outdoors, aided by audio recordings for each station available on our app. Christmas Eve and Easter pilgrimages provided opportunities to visit the sanctuary, beautifully decorated and filled with music. Some of these creative new events will surely become beloved traditions.

On May 1, 2015, Nathan Morris and his nephew, Mackenzie Morris, purchased the Saffell House from Mr. and Mrs. Wells with the intention of completely restoring and reopening the home to its former glory as a funeral home. By purchasing the building Nathan and Mackenzie also inherited an antique floor length mirror that was original to Cleveland Funeral Home in Mt. Eden. This mirror has found a permanent home at the Saffell House Funeral Home. It sits in our foyer as a reminder of the people before us, the history around us, and the future in front of us. The cost of the funeral varies depending on the wishes you have. The average cost of a funeral is between $5,000-$7,000, however, the most basic of services can cost as little as $1000. The cost includes all professional services including transportation, embalming and other preparations, the use of a facility for the ceremony, and the purchase of a casket or urn. The Historic Saffell House has been restored into a piece of working history that the people of Lawrenceburg can share.
After years of use, the apartments began to fall into disarray. At this time, Lawrenceburg native, Mr. Sherrell Wells and his wife Brenda, purchased the property and began the process of restoring the home. Not only did they put a lot of effort into the main property, but they transformed the previous six car garage into three more apartments.

Embalming sanitizes and preserves the body; it also slows down the decomposition process and enhances the appearance of the body damaged by traumatic death or illness. Embalming gives time to the family of the deceased to arrange a service, and allows the family the option of having an open-casket viewing. I recently used their services with the passing of my mother in August. The prices and services were wonderful and made this difficult time for our family so stress-free. I can't stress how thankful I am to La Funeral Services. It was at this time, the Saffell House was renovated into 7 beautiful apartments (three on the main floor and four on the second).

"If you go to a Korean barbecue restaurant and they don't cook the meat in front of you, that's a huge red flag," Kim said. "One, I question the quality of the meat because they don't bring it out to you raw and show you. Two, it goes against the custom of Korean barbecue." "Coming to work here was the first time it really made sense," Kim told Business Insider. "I'm cooking the food I grew up eating. It's the food my parents ate. It's the food I eat when I go home. It's just who I am."

The best Korean BBQ restaurants in Los Angeles
When an influx of Korean barbecue spots began opening up in Korea during the late 20th century, restaurateurs turned their attention to quantity and affordability to stay competitive. It quickly shot up in popularity, drawing in daily crowds of customers looking to enjoy limitless cuts of meat for a flat fee. Naengsam (frozen pork belly) gets a bad rap for low quality, but that’s not always the case if you know where to go. Nari is a classic example, serving nothing but frozen pork belly for over 30 years in Itaewon. Good-quality fresh pork is frozen and sliced thinly right before serving to maximize its flavors and ensure fast, even cooking, creating a different mouthfeel and taste than fresh pork.

It sneaks in a lot of Korean flavor profiles, like scallions and ginger. We went to Juk Story [a cafe serving Korean rice porridge in Annandale], and we got a little bit of Annandale in the book. Angel is somebody who is really unique in that he’s not Korean American, but he has this fluency in the cuisine unlike anyone I know. Danny is somebody who I think is really important, because he’s really done the work. He’s really somebody who I feel has become a mentor to many in the country, not just obviously the East Coast.
The secret to its scrumptiousness lies in the marinades and quick grilling, which seals in the meat’s natural sweetness and savoriness. It can also be stir-fried with some vegetables for another delicious way to enjoy it. The BBQ process often also involves marinating the meat before grilling in a blend of delicious sauces like soy sauce, sesame oil, and Korean pear, which will bring out one of the best flavors you’ll ever experience. Fried pork cutlets were first introduced in Korea while it was under Japanese occupation in the 1930s. The first Japanese iteration was born from French influence during the Meiji Period, which spanned from 1868 to 1912. The dish was based on côtelette de veau, a breaded and fried piece of veal, which the Japanese reinterpreted as tonkatsu.
Dak & Bop’s Museum District location was one of the first restaurants to bring extra-crispy Korean-style fried chicken to the inner loop, but since it shuttered in 2020, the Heights location carries on the tradition. Find juicy, double-fried wings and tenders, bulgogi fries, kimchi bisque, and pair your meal with beer or booze — Dad & Bop has a full bar. Located in front of Sinsa Station, Ggupdang specializes in pork shoulder aged for 15 days. The meat, quickly grilled on binchotan by professional staff, is tender and every bite bursts with juice. Don’t skimp on their famous rice cooked in dashi, which you can punch up with wasabi for maximum flavor.
If you’re in the market to buy cuts of meat for a Korean BBQ, there are a few places you can get it. One after another, giant pork cutlets come streaming out of the kitchen at Koreatown’s new sit-down donkatsu restaurant, Lasung House. It’s the latest opening from hospitality group On6thAvenue, which also runs Korean barbecue hotspots Quarters and Origin in Chapman Market. Served pounded thin, and crispy with frizzled edges, these eight-or-so-inch long cutlets almost extend past the edges of the plates meant to carry them. In Los Angeles, chef Akira Back also aimed to bring a twist to the Korean steakhouse concept.

KBBQ Sauces, on the other hand, are sesame oil, doengjang (soybean paste), gochujang (red pepper paste), and ganjang with different proportions of salt, pepper, and garlic depending on the group’s preference. Modern Korean barbeque can be traced back to the cooking practices of the Maek Tribe of the Goryeo era (37 BC to 668 AD), when they would skewer meat and roast it over a fire. This element is exactly why eating K-BBQ is popular in countries that use drinking as a way to bond with others (like Philippines or the US, for example).
A bit challenging to make, the process covers the bland taste eggplants are notorious for, and offers a delightful blend of garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and gochugaru. Some of the sides served with KBBQ may include glass noodles, cucumbers, and the world-famous kimchi. Keep in mind that the variety of ban chan served will depend on the season and how formal the setting of the restaurant is. All you need to make bulgogi at home is a mix of soy sauce, sugar, sesame seed oil, garlic, ground black pepper and pear juice. However you can’t use just any soy sauce and pear juice in your bulgogi recipe. Use the ones you find at your local H-mart to get closer to the flavor of the bulgogi marinade people are raving about (see below).
Before joining Washingtonian in July 2016, she was Food Editor and Young & Hungry columnist at Washington City Paper. My impression is Northern Virginia has one of the more historical Korean-American communities in the country. Chicago used to have it, but everyone’s left and moved way out in the suburbs and dispersed.
Koreans also love wrapping their meat with leafy vegetables into tavos called ssam, and most restaurants provide napa cabbage, dried seaweed, or lettuce for this. Lately, people are particularly enamored of perilla leaf because of its minty licorice taste that really goes well with meat. While an outdoor grill doesn’t offer the same communal dining experience as a traditional Korean BBQ grill, we still use our Weber BBQ occasionally to cook marinated Korean BBQ, which tastes equally incredible.
Karne offers premium cuts of in-house dry aged beef and reserve-cut Japanese wagyu grilled table-side alongside stunning plates of seafood, raw bar offerings, and caviar service. The appetizers are not worth skipping — from the yellowtail crudo with scallops and shrimp in a yuzu dressing to the rice wine poached mussels with toasted milk bread. Reserve the multi-course chef’s tasting for an immersive deep dive into Korean flavors. With an extensive 100-plus bottle wine list and a diverse cocktail menu, the drink options are equally up to par with the food.
As long as you decide on the right restaurant, the wait is always worth it. To make a proper ssam, on top of a crisp piece of lettuce, layer a perilla leaf, then a small or medium-sized piece of meat, two different pieces of ban chan, and a sauce. Eat this lettuce wrap whole with your hands, and then repeat; I've always affectionately called these Korean tacos.
If you’re craving something savory, this is a great option and one of the most common outside of Korea. Plus, out of all the Korean BBQ meats and sauces you've probably heard of, this one is the most legendary. Plus, Korean BBQ sauces are quite distinctive, and each special blend tastes sweet, salty, and spicy to varying degrees. The most common ingredients in KBBQ sauces are soy sauce, dark soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, pear juice, and brown sugar, and at the bottom of the post I'll show you how to make the best KBBQ sauces at home. In this article we cover the basics of making Korean BBQ at home, from the meats & marinates to the setup, sides, and sauces you'll want to prepare ahead of time. Also, please remember to consider others when dining together and make sure that everyone has enough food.
If the pieces are too big for a single bite, cut them smaller using kitchen scissors. You may think that having another full meal after eating Korean BBQ is strange, but it is actually a great way to cool down after the hot BBQ and to wash off the greasy taste in your mouth. You won’t really feel the need for Korean side dishes when you eat Korean barbeque at home, but they greatly enhance the overall culinary experience. Although the majority of this guide’s instructions are geared towards indoor BBQ using a Korean BBQ grill, you can still cook your meat on an outdoor grill by following your manufacturer’s instructions.
YoonCy is where affordability meets kalbi short ribs with the most blessed kiss. This is the go-to joint for simple Korean barbeque that brings tradition to traditional fast food orders. Although attached to the Kapahulu Shopping Center, YoonCy has a very authentic Korean aunt and uncle local galbi restaurant.
The restaurant feels like a nightclub
While the restaurant has had its doors open since April 1, it will reopen Tuesday, April 16, after a one-day pause on April 15. Going forward, Lasung will be open seven days a week and will eventually sell frozen cutlets to prepare at home. Run by the same team behind Park’s, KTeam BBQ takes over the space that once held Ong Ga Nae, which quietly closed last year. The star of the show, however, is the thinly sliced frozen pork belly, a cut popular in South Korea. Paired with supplemental myeonglan paste (pollack roe) or the classic trio of spicy soybean paste, garlic and jalapeño, each lettuce or perilla-wrapped bite will transport you to Seoul. This popular Korean barbecue restaurant is one of the only places in town that uses smokeless charcoal grills to power their grilling experience. Meats range from prime kalbi short ribs to ribeye bulgogi – all grilled table-side and paired with banchan. Handam offers various all-you-can-eat options that proves to be a great value for diners.
The team behind Michelin-recognized Liu’s Cafe opens an ode to modern Korean favorites
Newbies to Korean cuisine or Korean cooking tend to overload their lettuce and dip their ssam into too many of the Korean barbecue sauces, but this can destroy the taste and the experience. As for grilling the meat, only offer to cook and serve others if you know what you are doing. Just once or twice is okay, and if it’s already cooked and you’d like to keep it warm, carefully place it on the side on your grill. When you're at a restaurant in Korea, ring the bell for service if you’re too shy to yell “jeogiyo,” though sometimes servers get too busy to mind the pings and neglect your table until someone yells for them. Oh, and it is totally okay to ask for more ban chan and to have your grill pan changed if it starts charring.

As for pork, get sliced pork belly that isn’t cured or smoked; either fresh or frozen will work. In other words, bacon is not samgyupsal, even though it is the exact same cut of the animal. As for chicken, for easier grilling, it is recommended to choose boneless cuts when doing at-home KBBQ. This radish salad pairs well with bibimbap (mixed rice with meat and assorted vegetables), and it adds a slightly sweet and peppery flavor to your meat. Whether you go for beef or pork, these are a slightly pricier option than samgyeopsal. Just keep in mind that you’re paying for a thicker slab of meat with a rich, delicious flavor and the typical Korean marinade.

Obviously the most famous drink on this list, soju is a clear liquid usually in a green bottle, made from rice and grains. While most say it has a ‘clean’ taste like vodka, I believe it is a bit sweeter and less powerful than vodka, which makes it a great base for a variety of soju cocktails. A generous amount of this oil enhances the taste of your meat, especially if you add salt & pepper to the mix. As for the other, that’s known as jin ganjang, which is chemically processed to make the flavor of soybeans and wheat stronger.
How much has Korean food across the country actually changed in the years since your last book came out?
In addition to meat, the restaurant employs masters of naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) and gomtang (beef bone soup, milky white from a long simmer) with decades of experience. Chickens are prepped each morning and grilled right on the table over charcoal, tightly trapping all their juices inside. Go for the pristine salt-grilled version if you really want to taste the quality of the chicken, or try the sauce-covered version for some heat. The chicken gizzards and hearts are also delicacies, though they’re only available in limited quantities. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a chance to try the grilled chicken neck, a tender showstopper with just the right amount of fat. To make this savory dish, sirloin, rib-eye, or brisket beef are most traditional, though any marinated cut could work.
"There are some restaurants where you walk in, and it just doesn't seem like a barbecue restaurant," Kim said. "Flashing strobe lights and that type of stuff, clearly that model is successful, and to each their own. But, for me, that would be a red flag." Kim is now the senior director of culinary operations for Baekjeong, a Korean barbecue restaurant with seven locations in California and Washington — and an eighth opening this summer in Los Angeles' famed Koreatown neighborhood.
No matter what grill you use for your Korean BBQ party, you’ll want to keep a window open because things will get smoky. Additionally, grilling can cause oil splashes onto adjacent items; thus, it would be prudent to cover those objects with a tablecloth or remove them before beginning to grill. In the U.S., Korean grocers such as H-Mart carry these types of meats.
This is a crunchy Korean side dish that isn’t spicy and is a great option for those who cannot tolerate the heat. Although, personally, I feel that this seasoned bean sprout dish is best served with gochugaru to add a little kick and flavor to your meat. Mostly seen in KBBQ places during fall, this side dish adds a sweet, juicy, and somewhat peppery taste to your meat. In Korea it’s seen as a refreshing treat to reset your palate after eating too much meat.
Beautifully marbled meat cuts and entrancing searing won’t fail to transport your entire being to the meat heavens, and that’s not just some obscure slang for welcomed cholesterol. Affordability and bona fide Korean BBQ flavor make a delicious rendezvous at Yummy Korean BBQ. The restaurant doesn’t have the aesthetic flair we’ve come to enjoy at other Korean spots, but on-point mains with perfect banchan titillates the palate. Gen Korean BBQ House, a Korean barbecue restaurant with 30 locations across California, Nevada, and Arizona, has appeared in Union Square. The full-service, all-you-can-eat menu (for around $30) is located at 150 E. 14th Street, near Third Avenue, formerly the longtime home of 5 Napkin Burger.
"We've spent so much time sourcing quality meat; we want to ensure you're eating the meat when it's perfectly cooked," he said. "People wait a long time to get into our dining room because we're embraced by the community so strongly, so we don't want you to have to wait and then pay for your meal — and also have to cook it." Gen Korean BBQ House offers a premium dining experience without forgetting the communal objective of Korean BBQ eating. My sated excitement is convinced that you’ll be pleased with both menu and restaurant manner. Founded by Korean immigrant Micky Kim in Annandale, Virginia in 2007, this Asiatown restaurant is best-known for its menu of affordable grilled meats. Located in Diho Square, the restaurant has a colorful and kitschy interior and blasts K-Pop on the speakers.
This longstanding Korean barbecue joint serves up meaty classics like bulgogi, galbi, and samgyeopsal (three-layered pork belly), made to be shared table-wide. Order the kimchi jigae stew or kimchi pajeon, and keep it all to yourself. Dishes like bulgogi date back centuries, while depictions show noblemen gathering outdoors in the 18th century to grill meat over an open fire while drinking and reciting poetry.
Finish with instant fried rice, which servers stir-fry with leftover meat and side dishes in front of your eyes. For beef, opt for the sirloin, short ribs, chuck eye, and finger short ribs. But if you’re gunning for bulgogi, make sure that your home grill is compatible for cooking this delicate slice (like a griddle surface or a grill pan). You'll also need to prepare your marinade ahead of time, to flavor the meat overnight. This popular Korean BBQ meat blends boneless & diced chicken in gochujang mixed with an assortment of vegetables (mostly cabbage), tteokbokki, and noodles. In Korea most restaurants, like Yoogane Dakgalbi, have circular pans that can hold tons of melted cheese on top once you're done with just the marinated meat.
There aren’t any gimmicks at Nam-Yeongdon, but customers wait patiently for hours to sample an ensemble of prime-quality pork grilled over charcoal and paired with flights of house-made banchan. The space has been serving pork and noodles since 1982, but it experienced a boom in popularity after owner Jung Jaebum rebranded his late father’s business in 2017. The wait always stretches into hours, proving the basics, done right, still command a crowd. While most of the menu is focused on the different cutlets, Lasung also offers a full lineup of side dishes to accompany the meal.
